Abstract U ovom preglednom radu obrađuje se tema posttraumatskog stresnog poremećaja (PTSP). Stoga je presudno pravovremeno provođenje dijagnostičkih i terapijskih postupaka i postizanje oporavka bolesnika u čemu aktivnu ulogu imaju i socijalni radnici.
Abstract (english) In this overview, we will cover the topic of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD for short. The main cause of PTSD is being exposed to a severely stressful event outside of the regular human experience, in which there is a life-threatening experience or a chance for significant injury. The importance of this topic is shown by the fact that a substantial number of individuals develop symptoms of PTSD, a whopping 9% of the general population. This topic’s significance is also evident in the large number of individuals in our country who suffer from PTSD. Moreover, we will showcase the historical context, the causes of the disorder, the clinical picture as well as the diagnostic and treatment methods for this disorder. The most common causes of PTSD include being immersed in the traumatic event itself, unintentional and unwanted recall of the event, fear, insecurity, anxiety and nightmares connected with the traumatic event which, among other factors, significantly negatively impact the general well-being and quality of the patient’s life. For this reason it is of utmost importance to introduce diagnostic and therapeutic actions to ensure the recovery of the patient, in which social workers are actively involved. The quality of life of the person affected by this disorder is visible in their demeanor, reactions as well as in how they handle regular everyday activities. We will also cover the activities of the social worker who, using their acquired knowledge and competencies, actively participates in treatment and recovery. Furthermore, we analyzed the diagnostic process and the treatment process in which the first step is the evaluation through testing and clinical interviewing. One of the tools used for diagnosing PTSD is the Self-assessment Survey through which the individual is asked questions that lead to the discovery of the disorder. In case they are diagnosed with PTSD, we consider introducing medication most efficient for the recovery process. During the General Treatment Plan we also analyze other important steps (e.g. emotional regulation, exposure, etc.) in the treatment and the role of those steps in the entire process. To finalize, we introduce and elaborate on the impact a social worker makes in the treatment for PTSD.
